“Music Festivals & Camping are 2 things that are definitely not mutually exclusive but could and should be” and “Why would you ever go to Disneyland when you could just go to a Music Festival?” These are the thoughts that would cross my mind every 5 seconds at my first camping festival ever, back in 2015 when David Guetta ruled the world.

But it’s 2024 now & that is definitely not the case but don’t worry David, the Love is DEFINITELY not gone. A lot has changed in the EDM community, but one thing remains the same: our love for the ever-evolving music scene and everything that comes with it—including some of the most incredible camping music festivals as far as the eye can see. Each year it seems the production levels, artists, outfits, camping amenities and overall experience gets better and better; it’s an experience that will change your life like no 2-day parking lot rave you have to drive home from ever will.

First, we're covering the basics. Here are some commonly asked questions we get about camping festivals:

Rolita Couture x iHR Floral Punk Princess Outfit

Where is the best place to camp at a music festival?

There are some spots that will make things easier, but no spots are bad at a camping festival! Look for camping spots that are close enough to resources like food or water, or the entrance to the festival itself so you can minimize how much extra walking you need to do. It's also a good idea to look for shade, which brings us to our next question:

How do you stay cool at a camping music festival?

Look for camping spots that are under trees or shade, because that will keep you cool as much as possible. You can also look for shade structures that will obstruct the morning or afternoon sun, making it easier to sleep in or stay cool in the afternoon. Get some extra ice for your water bottles, and bring cold towels to stick in ice water throughout the day that you can put on the back of your neck to stay cool.

Should you lock your tent at a festival?

If you feel more comfortable doing so, you can! Or, you can lock your personal belongings in your car and keep only your sleeping bag and pillows in your tent. Just be careful not to lose your keys!

From the East Coast to the West Coast & everything in between, here are the Top 10 Camping Music Festivals to attend this year and next!

Electric Daisy Carnival - Camp EDC

edc vegas

Location: Las Vegas

Dates: May 17-19, 2024

Tickets: https://www.savormeditation.com/

As we all know, EDC *usually* takes place the last weekend in May. This year, due to the pandemic, Insomniac & many other event giants made the tough call to postpone some of the biggest music festivals to October - which isn’t the worst thing that could’ve happened! EDC, and especially Camp EDC, is definitely an investment. Having a little extra time to save up, truly plan your outfits, food, & accommodations is probably a good thing considering my friends and I decided we’d full send EDC for the first time in 2019 about 2 months before going (*NOT* recommended!). What I am 100% recommending, however, is to DO CAMP EDC. Although I never did the whole “stay on the strip” thing, I can say with full confidence that camping was THE BEST WAY TO DO EDC. Not only do you have various sleeping options & the tents are already pre-built with AC units so you don’t die in the Vegas heat, but you also have easy & unlimited access to and from the festival!

Other perks of camping include but are not limited to: some of the most amazing coffee & lemonade stands you can walk up to every morning before heading over to goat yoga, fun vendors, rollerskating in the rink, pools & waterslides and of course, enjoying the DJ’s that come perform intimate sets on the campgrounds - it truly is all around magic!

Electric Forest

Photo: Insomniac

Location: Rothbury, MI

Dates: June 20 - 23, 2024

Tickets: https://www.savormeditation.com/2022/

In my humble opinion, Electric Forest is another right of passage in the music festival scene, right next to EDC. Before EDC ever had camping, Forest was the place to hitch up your tent, take off your shoes & get lost in a mystical forest away from the hustle and bustle of Vegas or any of the other Insomniac events. From Said The Sky’s Ocular Organ Set playing the piano with his fans, to the enchanting sounds of Rüfüs Du Sol coursing through the trees, this 4 day music festival is a mystical oasis for hippies, forest fairies & dreamers alike.

Make sure to check out the festival map to plan a meeting spot with your group, get acquainted with the campgrounds & check out where you’ll be camping. Unless you and your group of 20 or more decide to do group camping, you’ll want to get there early, since according to the website: Campgrounds are assigned based on the flow of traffic and the parking crew’s work flow. HQ cannot guarantee campground placement for anyone arriving at any time, including those who are arriving on Wednesday.”

Typically a 4 day festival held every summer, this year the festival was postponed until 2022, leaving you plenty of time to plan & prepare! Make sure to check out the official Electric Forest website as well as other sources (YouTube is always my go-to when it comes to festival prep because you get some really honest first hand accounts!) to make sure you cover all of your bases!

Location: Salmo, BC Canada

Dates: July 26-29, 2024

I had no choice but to throw in this Canadian heavy hitter to the mix. Shambhala is a name that is thrown around so often and for good reason! From an incredible production to a lineup that’ll have you updating your passport REAL quick, the only qualm for US festival goers in my opinion really is the distance.

From Anti Up, Seven Lions & Rezz to What So Not, Malaa & Channel Tres - the Shambhala stages will have you teleporting to all kinds of different dimensions. When you do come back to earth between sets, make sure to hang a kind note on the Wish Tree, check out the artists at the Basscamp Art Gallery or simply grab your flotation devices and head to the Salmo River! Just make sure you adhere to the 8 Pillars & respect the river!

Since you will most likely have to travel to the festival, make sure to check out the official Shambhala Website for info regarding transportation, shuttles, packing recommendations & everything else you need to know to enjoy your weekend!

]]>
Tulum has easily become one of—if not the—hottest spot to visit these days, and with good reason. From the forest foliage to the white sand beaches, outdoor gyms made of bamboo & a rising electronic scene, it’s no wonder DJs, dancers and anyone with an Instagram account are flocking to this majestic Mexican paradise on the Caribbean side of the Yucatan Peninsula.

Raving Responsibly

But, as is the case with most beautiful places that go viral on social media, it has become overrun with unethical tourism practices. With many tourists forgetting all of the wonders and the richness of the culture surrounding said nightclubs, we wanted to encourage ravers to learn more about the places they visit for festivals and parties.

Now don’t get me wrong, I’m all for traveling to enjoy some EDM in beautiful locations and foreign countries. Originally I wanted to write about how to rave in Tulum as an escape from the winter cold, but as I was doing my research for this article I found it hard to want to coax people into simply “Raving in Tulum” without giving context to the wonderful people, history and culture that exists there.

As a Latina, I have deep Mayan roots. I felt the way that some people were experiencing Tulum as just a party scene takes away from the entirety of the magic that lies within these once well preserved Mayan stomping grounds. I felt called to re-route my article.

Tulum is more than just a place to rave, although the closest EDM-filled beach nightclub is never too far (check out the “cool hotels to stay at” section for a hotels that host some really fun events!). It truly is such a spiritual place that deserves to be enjoyed in its entirety. So, without further ado, here are a few ways to rave responsibly and respectfully in Tulum!

Cool Hotels to Stay At:

Popular Festivals & Upcoming Concerts:

All you need to know is: Sundream Tulum. This festival features the legends of the sun themselves: Rüfüs Du Sol. I couldn’t think of a better artist to headline in such a beautiful and sacred place, honestly, other than maybe Odesza! This 4-day festival takes place at the Papaya Playa Project. Opening weekend takes place March 3rd - 6th, with closing weekend (which is sold out) taking place March 10th -13th.

Three days of the festival include live music events, while Sunday will be a rest, recovery & wellness day. The convenient thing is that the venue is one of the most beautiful stays in Tulum, IMO, as well as the fact that you’d get to co-mingle with everyone else attending. It's an enriching experience that will bring you closer to yourself and your environment.

The number one tried and true festival that will always pop up in your Tulum Music Festival search is Day Zero Fest, created and hosted by Damian Lazarus. This year’s event, which took place in early January, marked 10 years since the festival’s inception in 2012—the ending of the Mayan calendar & the beginning of a transcendental period for Tulum and all who visit! I mean, you can literally feel the magic in every video and photo, and the best part is that the festivals being mentioned are extremely mindful of preserving the beauty and magic of Tulum.

In fact, if you visit Day Zero’s website, you can read more about their commitment to sustainability, which started in 2018 with a full fledged team dedicated to preserving the jungle with their pillars/goals being to: REFUSE, REDUCE, RECOVER & RETURN. Read more about it & learn about how you can contribute here.

I would be remiss if I didn't bring up Zamna Festival, though! At Zamna, you can find yourself immersed deeply in the majestic Mayan culture, from authentic cuisine, cabanas & their very own Cenote, which is known for hosting some amazing artists! With sets from artists like Damian Lazarus, Charlotte De Witte and Adam Beyer, there is no shortage of talent to grace its white sand beaches.

Smaller clubs & event promoters like SET underground hosted Anjunadeep’s own Spencer Brown, Luttrel, QRION, Moonboots & JUST HER at the end of January of this year at a secret Cenote. Make sure to check out the following promoters as well, as they seem to be the ones on top of most of the events in Tulum!

Vagalume Tulum

Deep House Tulum

Tulum Tower

3rd Eye The Sound Tribe

COVID-19 Restrictions:

Many of the aforementioned hotels and events are following the COVID-19 regulations set forth by the local government, which, as of March 2022 and in accordance with the Mexico Tourist Card website: “Mexico is OPEN to ALL visitors. No special requirements, health tests, or quarantines are required. However, travelers are reminded to follow Health Travel Guidance as well as local and state advisories regarding COVID-19."

While COVID-19 restrictions may be easing in many parts of the world, you are a visitor in another country and should be respectful of the local community. Take a COVID-19 test in the days prior to your visit and reconsider travel if you are sick. There will always be another rave.

Where to Fly Into:

Typically, you would be flying into the Cancun Airport, but it all depends on your itinerary. For safety & security purposes, I would definitely recommend flying there!

Local Sights to Check Out:

Food:
Mexican food is rich with delicious flavors, textures and color. The Mexican food you experience in the US may be delicious, but the diverse cooking customs and practices found throughout Mexico mean that there are likely dishes you've never seen in the US and elsewhere. Take some time to enjoy the local food while you're there and try something new. I recommend checking out the Central Palm food trucks.

Cenotes:

You can’t go to Tulum and not visit a Cenote. A “Cenote” is a picturesque/pinterest-worthy sinkhole made of limestone that is typically found in the Yucatan Peninsula and parts of Central America. A few of the hotels/resorts have their own private cenotes that have been known to host private parties and raves, but you’d definitely have to dig to find out when/where those take place. In the meantime, these are a few of the local favorites & remember: Cenotes are still sacred places that deserve to be preserved.

Many Cenotes offer showers so people can enter the cenotes free of any sunscreen. The chemicals found in many SPFs often have long lasting & irreversible damage on the ecosystem of the area. Make sure to stay mindful of leaving no trace by being considerate of your impact on these delicate ecosystems. Do your research on how to get to and enjoy the cenotes since some are more easily accessible than others. Some you can bike to, others you have to pay a taxi to get to and it is recommended to have that taxi wait for you.

 1. Cenote Taakbiha
 2. Cenote Calavera
 3. Cenote Azul

Check out this blog here to find a really cool map of all the Cenotes in and around Tulum + all the amenities they have to offer here & make sure to check out these playlists here + here to tap into the vibe of Tulum before you go!

Local History:

Tulum and the area around the Yucatan peninsula has some of the richest history on Earth. Mayan pyramids in the area are open to visit, and other ancient ruins are yours to explore. Even if you're visiting Tulum strictly on rave business, it's worth taking some time to check out the ancient sites and monuments around the area. Here is a map for you to check out.

]]>
Heading to a music festival abroad and don’t know where to begin with planning your adventure? I’ve got you covered! I’m sharing my best tips and tricks on how to prepare for an international music festival so you can feel more relaxed and able to make the most of your trip!

Don’t Forget Your Ticket(s)

You’d be surprised by how many people I’ve traveled with who’ve forgotten either their festival ticket or travel ticket. Secure your festival tickets in advance, early birds are always significantly cheaper than later releases. Once you’ve secured entry to the event, get your travel tickets, and again snatch those as quickly as you can, the prices will increase as the event approaches.

Otherwise, check if the festival is offering any all-inclusive packages, this will make planning a whole lot easier as you won’t need to figure out any of the travel logistics, more time to spare to figure out the fun parts of the trip!

Get Travel Insurance

Buy comprehensive travel insurance. Take the advice from someone who hasn’t always had insurance and has watched some trips go sideways then wished they were covered. It’s never a bad thing to be over prepared, particularly when you’re going overseas and given how unpredictable travel can be these days, make sure you’re covered properly. It's usually less than $50 anyway, which is far better than paying hundreds or thousands of dollars later on if there is an emergency (pro tip: travel insurance often doubles as health insurance while abroad).

Check Your Passport & Visa Requirements

The minimum passport validity requirement can vary depending on which country you’re flying to or the airline you’re traveling with. From experience, this can fluctuate between 3 and 6 months. If your passport doesn’t meet the travel requirement you could be denied entry into your destination country. Check your passport’s validity ahead of time to be sure you don’t encounter any issues on your day of travel.

Many countries also require passports to have at least one empty page in them in order to grant entry, but you likely know that already if you're someone worried about having a spare page in your passport. ;) You can check visa requirements and general travel warnings by country here.

Be Accommodation Savvy

Whenever I travel to a music festival abroad, I book accommodation near the venue, preferably walking distance so I don’t have to worry about getting back to my room once the event is over. Having accommodation nearby leaves some of the guesswork out of figuring out how to get transport to the venue, which can be daunting when you’re in a new place.

If you’re feeling particularly overwhelmed about traveling abroad, I suggest arriving a day before the music festival so you have time to get acclimatized, especially if you need some time to recover after a long travel day.

Do Your Research

This applies to anything from the weather, to the local currency, the food, and even the venue. Simple things like knowing whether the venue is indoor or outdoor will already give some indication of how to prepare for your festival adventure and be able to anticipate what you need. Get to know where you’re going so you feel comfortable and confident about your trip.

Try On Your Outfits

Unless you have crazy amounts of luggage allowance, my advice is to pack light but wisely. The heavier the bag the more it’s going to cost you. The weather, the venue and the programme will largely impact your outfit decisions, so going back to my point above: do your research! Once you’ve done your research and you’ve familiarized yourself with the music festival, plan and try on your outfits, then only pack what’s necessary.

Respect the Do’s and Don'ts

It’s so important to check what items aren’t allowed into the festival grounds and what rules the event enforces before turning up to the event. These really differ from one music festival to another, so to avoid drawing attention to yourself for all the wrong reasons make sure you read through their guidelines properly and respect them.

Speaking of the do's and don'ts, read up on the local culture of the place you're traveling to before you get there. It's a great way to understand the local mentality and avoid any mishaps during your trip. Be mindful of COVID-19 precautions that are local to your travel destination, and do your part by getting the vaccine before you go.

Give Yourself Enough Time to Pack

Don’t rush your packing on the day you’re leaving for the music festival. Give yourself plenty of time so you don’t miss anything and also don’t put too much pressure on yourself before traveling. You can always do one final check right before you depart.

Learn the Local Language

Study a few sentences on Google Translate before you land, just to help you along on your trip. Phrases as simple as asking where the toilet is or asking how much something costs will not only prevent you from wasting time figuring things on your own but will help you immerse yourself in the local culture more. It may earn you the respect of locals, and you may end up making a friend or two along the way!

Be Prepared for Emergencies

Make a note of the contact details for your nearest embassy or consulate, and get acquainted with what they do to help in case of emergencies. Also memorize the code for the emergency services for the country you’re visiting. Again, it never hurts to be too prepared!

Whether you have your rave bucket list finalized, laminated, and framed, or you’re just now discovering the expansive world of overseas and out of state shows, now is the perfect time to start turning those dreams into a reality. Check out these 5 tips to help you start planning for your dream destination festival in 2021.

If you’re like me, you’ve been using your spare time during the COVID quarantine watching old streams of top bucket list festivals from years past. If you’re also like me, the first things you’re itching to do once it’s completely safe to venture back out into the world is:

 1. Travel to a new destination, and
 2. Attend a kick ass music festival.

While the time where these activities are possible might seem like eons away, there are actions you can start taking now to prepare yourself so you’re completely ready when those festival announcements peak over the horizon. Whether you have your rave bucket list finalized, laminated, and framed, or you’re just now discovering the expansive world of overseas and out of state shows, now is the perfect time to start turning those dreams into a reality.

Here are 5 tips to help you start planning for your dream destination festival in 2021:

1. Make a wishlist

So you want to attend a destination festival in 2021 but you don’t know which ones to put at the top of your list? Research every festival that sparks your interest, even if it may seem like it’s unrealistic. Once you have your dream list, narrow it down to your top 3-5. Take into account the locations, what lodging would look like, the time of year they take place, and how easily you would be able to fit them into your schedule.

Focusing on only a few destination festivals makes it easier for you to plan and turn those “if only” thoughts into “I’m going.” You don’t have to attend all of them in 2021, but by starting the research of everything that goes into attending your wishlist fests, you’re already giving yourself realistic expectations you can start planning for.

Make sure you’re following the official social media pages for the fests on your wishlist! You’ll want to see regular updates on event news, ticket releases, lineup drops, set times, etc. Most festivals (if not all) will regularly update their Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram pages with this information, so giving them a quick follow is a foolproof way to make sure you’re in the know of any updates.

2. Start saving

This tip seems like a no brainer, but it’s also the hardest one to follow through on. It’s no surprise that raves cost money and traveling to one costs even more. The earlier you start saving and planning for any upcoming trips the better. So why not start now?

Given the current economic climate we’re living in, you might find it harder to put away funds to support your future festival plans. But there are small ways you can start stashing cash so you’re not breaking the bank last minute.

Start by setting up a separate savings account specifically for trip funds. Each week or month, begin feeding it a few bucks here and there. Unsure on how much you should start contributing? Stash away the amount you were willing to pay for the 2020 festivals that have been postponed. If that is too much to save all at once, start by putting in the amount you would be spending monthly on Ubers, or weekly lattes. You’ll be surprised how much you can save when you’re mindful of your miscellaneous spending.

Another easy way to save money - create a "piggy" bank and throw your spare change/leftover cash in it weekly. It's amazing how quickly it can add up!

3. Begin booking

Already booking hotels and airfares might seem a bit too ambitious, but if you’re looking to save major cash now is the perfect time to start putting your plans into action. Start looking into the best options available for your travel and lodging plans, not just for the festival itself, but for any other excursions you might want to do around the show.

Flights, air bnbs, hotel rooms, and all other necessities are always cheaper the further in advance you book. So do your research, get the confirmation of your crew, and pull the trigger on beginning your destination festival experience. Just make sure all reservations you book come with a full refund in case plans change.

4. Plan excursions

One of the best things about a destination festival is the destination. If your schedule and budget allows it, look for the most exciting things you can do around the festival before, after, or in between the event.

Every area is its own treasure and has history and hidden gems worth exploring. If you don’t have a lot of time to spare, look up the top-rated restaurants in the location. Maybe you’ll stumble across a recipe you can try to recreate at home. If you travel out of the country for your fest, look up surrounding countries or destination points you’d love to visit once you’re over there. Travel between European countries is always a lot cheaper than traveling overseas. You’d be surprised at the amount of places you can visit with a small budget. If you’re unable to get the extended vacation hours off work and can’t extend your stay past the festival dates, look for activities to do before the doors open each day. Already planning to head to Europe for Tomorrowland? Maybe you’ll find yourself at the Jameson Factory in Ireland for a few days before the show! The possibilities are truly endless.

5. Put together your outfits

If you find yourself struggling to beat boredom this year, start throwing together looks that can serve as your outfits for your dream destination festival. Most festivals have a theme or specific vibe that you can use as the inspiration to your fashion choices. Want to blend in with the crowd? Look up how people in your festival destination like to rave. Ravers in the U.S. tend to dress up a bit more than those in other countries.

Whether you choose to stand out or camouflage in with the other festival-goers, you can start creating your outfits while you wait for 2021. Already have a trunk full of rave gear? See if you can create unique looks by pairing different pieces together. Need something new? Check out your favorite festival fashion sites that are still stocked with apparel and boasting sales. If you already have your outfits finalized, start mastering your hair and makeup looks. Don’t be afraid to pull inspiration and tips from some of your favorite Instagram influencers to spice up your looks and expand your skills.

While the 2020 blues might be getting you down, there’s plenty of ways to keep your spirits high when you have something monumental planned on the horizon. Planning ways to attend your dream destination fest in 2021 is a great way to keep yourself occupied, learn how to responsibly save for the events that bring you joy, and flex your creative muscles. Whether you dream of attending Ultra Japan, Tomorrowland, Beyond Wonderland, Electric Forest, Shamabala, or any others, it’s never too soon to grow your excitement and put plans in motion.

As another amazing year comes to an end, it’s about that time to start planning our spring and summer festival schedules! Sometimes this can be tough because there are so many amazing events to choose from and they seem to be adding more every year.

If you’re feeling a little stuck, you’re not alone! I’ve put together a little guide for you to hopefully help narrow down what events might be most suited for you this spring. Keep reading to hear my top 8 festival suggestions for spring 2020 and why each of them are going to be amazing in their own way!

1. OKEECHOBEE MUSIC & ARTS FESTIVAL

DATES: March 5-8, 2020

LOCATION: Sunshine Grove, Okeechobee, FL

WHY YOU SHOULD SEND IT: Okeechobee is without a doubt one of the most highly regarded festivals in Florida, and for good reason. This is a big year because after taking the past year off, Okeechobee has come back now as an Insomniac festival, and is sure to have its best year yet. Between an amazing camping experience right on the water and a stacked lineup featuring Bassnectar, Rufus du Sol, Tipper, and Kaskade, this is a festival you won’t want to miss.

2. ULTRA MUSIC FESTIVAL

DATES: March 20-22, 2020

LOCATION: Bayfront Park, Miami, FL

WHY YOU SHOULD SEND IT: Last year Ultra festival moved venues, much to the dismay of many of the regulars who attend. Ultra is one of the biggest music festivals in the world, and this year it is officially moving back to its previous and more popular venue, Bayfront Park - right in the heart of downtown Miami. Between Flume, Major Lazer, Above & Beyond, Gesaffelstein, Slander b2b Kayzo, Carl Cox, and many more, there is something for everyone at this year’s Ultra!

Ultra Miami Phase 1 Lineup 2020

3. BEYOND WONDERLAND

DATES: March 20-21, 2020

LOCATION: NOS Events Center, San Bernadino, CA

WHY YOU SHOULD SEND IT: Beyond Wonderland is a favorite amongst Insomniac festival-goers, and for obvious reasons! For this weekend in March, the NOS turns into an Alice in Wonderland-themed utopia. The stage production and decorations are seriously next level and so on-theme with the Alice-in-wonderland vibes. The lineup has yet to be announced but is sure to be amazing based on all of the artists who have played in years past.

Beyond Wonderland 2020

4. BUKU MUSIC & ART PROJECT

DATES: March 20-21, 2020

LOCATION: Mardi Gras World, New Orleans, LA

WHY YOU SHOULD SEND IT: Buku is a very unique festival because it’s so much more than music. After attending last year I got to really understand and appreciate what this is all about. It emphasizes New Orleans culture through graffiti and other street art, and is chalked full of local artists and performers. This year’s lineup features Illenium, Zeds Dead, Flume, Alison Wonderland, and many more.

Buku Music and Arts Project 2020

5. UBBI DUBBI

DATES: April 18-19, 2020

LOCATION: Globe Life Park, Arlington, TX

WHY YOU SHOULD SEND IT: Though there’s something exciting about attending a festival during its first year, sometimes the best year to go to a festival is the second year after they’ve had a chance to work out a few kinks. Ubbi Dubbi had an incredibly successful first year in 2019 and is already making announcements for round two in 2020. They’ve already announced 6 artists that will perform: Seven Lions, Green Velvet, Illenium, Camelphat, Adventure Club, and Kaskade. They’re also moving venues, so this is definitely going to be an exciting year to attend this one! Check back for the Phase 2 lineup - coming soon!

Ubbi Dubbi Lineup 2020 Phase 1

6. EDC LAS VEGAS

DATES: May 15-17, 2020

LOCATION: Las Vegas Motor Speedway, Las Vegas, Nevada

WHY YOU SHOULD SEND IT: I’m always going to be biased and tell you to go to EDCLV because it was my first festival, and is the one I make sure to never miss. However, this is going to be an extra special year to go because it will be the festival’s tenth year in Las Vegas! There’s something about being in such a magical city with tens of thousands of ravers that is just unmatchable, and this year’s festival and lineup are about to be its best yet! Keep an eye out for the 2020 lineup soon!

7. LIGHTNING IN A BOTTLE

DATES: May 20-25, 2020

LOCATION: Buena Vista Lake, Kern County, CA

WHY YOU SHOULD SEND IT: Lightning In A Bottle is another festival that’s famous for having way more than just music. This festival is truly a spiritual experience, and the Do LaB brings lots of incredible art and activities to create one of the most unique and rewarding festivals out there. The lineup for this year’s performances and events has yet to be announced, but we’ll be on the lookout for it when it drops.

Lightning in a Bottle 2020

8. MOVEMENT

DATES: May 23-25, 2020

LOCATION: Hart Plaza, Detroit, MI

WHY YOU SHOULD SEND IT: Movement is easily one of the top techno festivals, especially in the US. If you like to avoid the more mainstream EDM events and stick to more classic house and techno vibes, Movement is definitely the move (see what I did there?). The lineup hasn’t been announced yet, but past lineups include Richie Hawtin, Carl Cox, Adam Beyer, Nicole Moudaber, and Get Real. But this festival isn’t completely limited to house and techno -- artists such as Griz, Diplo, Rezz, and Gucci Mane have also performed here!

Movement 2020

Spring is always one of the best seasons to attend festivals, and every year just seems to get better and better as our culture continues to grow and spread! You really can’t go wrong with any of these events, and I have a feeling this year is going to be all of our best yet! Where will we see YOU in 2020?!

Paradiso

Held at one of the most beautiful venues, The Gorge Amphitheatre in George, WA, Paradiso is Seattle’s #1 summer festival! Put on by USC Events on June 15-16, 2018 this festival is all about #themessage! This festival brings in some of the best headliners in EDM! Lost Lands

lost lands forest logo

Lost Lands is my #1 absolute favorite festival on this list. Creating the scene of a real-life Jurassic Park with dinosaurs in the trees and grass for all to headbang with is simply magical. Lost Lands held in Legend Valley, Thornville, OH is Excision’s very own creation with over 1,000,000 watts of bass. On Sept 14-16, 2018 if you love rib-cage rattling bass, you need to get your tickets! Don’t miss the Dinos. Come find me for my round two, I want to headbang with you!!

EDC LV

edc beaming heart logo

Located in my city of Las Vegas, NV, Electric Daisy Carnival is held on May 18-20th. Normally held in June, the founder of EDC and CEO of Insomniac Events, Pasquale Rotella, made it his mission to help with the heat by giving new dates to EDC. EDC 2018 has definitely built up the hype with a stacked lineup and new amenities (including camping for the very first time) for an even better experience at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway. Trust me with over 400,000 attendees last year, 2018 is sure to break that number. Remember when going to EDC it is still hot at night! Stay Hydrated!

Ultra

For 20 years now Miami, Florida has held one of the hottest outdoor events to kick off festival season right! March 29-31, 2019 Ultra will once again bring out the best partygoers like only Miami knows how to. Now a global enterprise, Ultra has reached multiple countries and sure to add more with every year they grow. If you need some fun in the sun to start your season right, go down to Miami!

Electric Forest

electric forest enchanted forest logo

Electric Forest is one of Mama Unicorn’s favorite festivals - located in gorgeous Sherwood Forest in Rothbury, Michigan. Spending 4 days immersed in the magic the forest brings is one still on my to-do list. The forest is alive in the day time and night with music and art to explore. E. Forest has given life to Sherwood and attendees since 2011. Held on two different weekends June 21-24 & June 28-July 1, each with the same great vibes for your mind, body, and soul. Channel your inner hippy to take a trip to E. Forest!

Coachella

The one and only Coachella have two weekends for good reason. The weekends of April 12-14 & April 19-21, 2019 are perfectly placed with major artists from every genre of music. 2018 brought out Eminem, Zomboy, and Beyonce who also brought out Destiny’s Child. It is one of the many festivals people suggest to check out at least one in your lifetime, if not for the music then for the food and art.

Life Is Beautiful

Another mixed genre music festival is held in my backyard in Downtown Las Vegas! It is more than just a music festival it is also an art festival. 2017 they had comedians, speakers, and artists all creating the best experience for you. Held Sept 21-23 this festival has been growing bigger with each year since its start in 2013. Locals and visitors mix together for three days full of experience. Come walk 18 blocks in DTLV to see another side of vegas.

Lighting In A Bottle

Dirty Birds unite! This festival is beautifully placed at Lake San Antonio in Bradley, CA. More than just a music festival it is a family festival. All ages welcome to come May 23-28, for music, talks, discussions, workshops for body and mind, cultural offerings, food and wellness session, art, yoga, etc. to name a few things. Since 1998 this festival as added so much for it to be more than just a music festival. Meet you at the Grand Artique Marketplace.

Dreamstate

Your trance destination awaits for those who are seeking it! Dreamstate is held annually in both Northern and Southern California. This August 17-18, 2018 will be Dreamstate San Francisco, CA. Dreamstate SoCal, which is normally held at the NOS Center in San Bernardino, CA is yet to have dates - hopefully, they announce it soon. Quite a lot of ravers are dying to go back to the event that never has trash on the floor and is full of P.L.U.R. If it is your time to escape into a state of trance then get your tickets now.

Nocturnal Wonderland & Beyond Wonderland

nocturnal wonderland colorful logo

beyond wonderland colorful nature logo

Both created by Pasquale to be more than meets the eye kind of festivals. Both fests are full of performers and attendees in amazing wonderland-inspired outfits, prancing through the festival for you to meet. Beyond is usually held in March to kick off the festival season and Nocturnal is held in September to end the season off on a good note. Nocturnal is the longest running festival for Insomniac. I have yet to go to either of these festivals but am dying too! Don’t be late to take me to Wonderland!

Other honorably mentioned festivals, while I was writing this article, were Escape, Holy Ship, and Groove Cruise. These festivals aren’t to be overlooked. They all have their unique edge for those seeking the adventure they find while attending. I have only experienced a few of these festivals myself and I am dying to experience a few others I have yet to. It seems as if there is a new festival added every other day. There are plenty to fill your top 10 differently than what is above but just remember what you like ina festival and to always be open to experience new adventures, you might find you like them!

If your favorite isn’t on this list that doesn’t mean it's not a great festival. Tell us in the comments below if we missed one of your favorite festivals and why!

Have a safe and happy festival season!

After last year’s disappointment with the cancellation of EDC Tokyo 2016, the time has come, my ninjas. The coming of EDC to Japan can mark a big introduction of a more electronic dance music culture presence here in Japan. Big news!

Some of you are getting ready to pack your bags for the first ever Electric Daisy Carnival Tokyo. But hold up, there are a couple of things you need to bring and a few things to take note of if you’re raving in Japan.

Unfortunately, this is not an article that will tell you what to bring physically. However, because I have been living here for about 3 years, I have some insight on the scene here as well as Japanese society. I hope to bring you the awareness that you will need to enjoy EDC Japan fully, or at least be able to understand it from a new perspective.

Festivals and EDM culture exists in Japan, but not as openly as it is in other countries. Societal norms and even the law had made it difficult for electronic dance music culture to thrive.

By the way, DANCING USED TO BE ILLEGAL after midnight until recently, and now we are free to dance! So…

please do not dance sign at rave in Japan

1. Bring your dance moves

An almost 70 year dancing ban is hard to believe, right? There’s some history behind this. Basically, anti-dance laws were created a little after World War 2. It is said that the reason behind the ban on dancing was because dancing halls or clubs, were often used to disguise prostitution. During this time, the economy was bad and times were hard. These dance clubs were connected to drugs, violence, and many times gangs.

Of course, the dancing didn’t stop, especially because it is human nature to dance to sick beats, and the thought of banning dancing is ridiculous. But in the past, there have often been closures of clubs and events due to allowing dancing. Like, actual dancing. It doesn’t help that the police are very strict with clubs holding multiple licenses in order to play music. I’ve been to an event where police came and shut down the event after midnight. The main DJ didn’t even get to play.

Anywho, these laws were made to try to stop illegal things from happening but it ended up being an oppressive act against the people. Fortunately, people protested and the government agreed that banning dancing prevented people from exercising their human right of expression. So now dancing is okay!

Whether it’s deep-seated fears of these laws or the reserved culture, I came to believe that people aren’t as dancey as they are where I am from. With my time being here, I noticed that only the brave, godly skilled, strange, or incredibly shit faced people dance. In America, I am an awkward dancer. In Japan, I am a dancer worthy of praise. (I am not anywhere near good by the way). This was because there was no one really around to compare me to.

The dance music culture is also shrouded in bad imagery. As I came from America, where it is common to go to clubs, I have developed a playboy image here unintentionally, especially since I often go to techno and house music events, and occasionally music festivals.

I wondered about this for a long time, but with some research and gathering opinions of hundreds of English students, I now know why (I’m an English teacher here). Combined with the restrictions of law, and clubs, and crazy music festivals being connected to sexual looseness, drugs, gangs, etc., it’s no wonder that people want to stay away from it.

Of course, the opinion of people who actually go to these clubs and the outsiders are extremely different. It may be that Japanese people like to party in a different way. But one thing is true – people are afraid to dance openly and freely.

On the other hand, when a club or festival builds up, and if a good amount of people start dancing, everyone starts to dance. Especially in a collectivist society which values togetherness, people here are very skilled at sensing the energy of a certain place and atmosphere. Through my experience, Japanese people are exceptional at feeling the music, getting deep and right into it. It just takes them a little bit of a push..like “it’s okay to dance now. I don’t have to be resitricted by social rules”. That kind of thing. If you want to now a bit more, you can research “honne” and “tatemae”, which is someone’s real behavior which they show to their friends and public behavior which is required in a work/public setting.

I’ve been to the most amazing parties in my life in Japan. The best ones of all were the ones where people just let go and enjoyed themselves. However, I feel that not many Japanese people on the surface know of this underground feeling. When people start dancing here, that’s when their true colors come out and it feels great.

This brings me to beg you EDM brothers and sisters to dance your heart out. Let loose, let go, be free. Don’t worry too much about the cultural rules here because you’re a foreigner and you’re not restricted to them. Do show people here that dancing is a form of freedom. Japan looks toward the west in terms of inspiration when it comes to music, fashion, and behaviors of expression.

Which brings me to my next point.

2. Bring your extroverted Western nature

It is popularly believed that Japanese people are shy, withdrawn, and hard to communicate with, especially in English. This is true to some extent, but not necessicarily. As long as you show interest in Japanese people, they will show interest in you.

In this society, initiating small talk isn’t as socially accepted as in other cultures. In trains, cafes, and convenience stores, I have had little to no interactions at all with strangers for three years. If I wanted interaction, I would have to be the one to initiate conversation. A simple “how are you doing?” is really strange for many people here if you don’t know the person. Even at events, this is true. However, I have overcome this barrier by trying extra hard to talk to people during events. It’s not that they didn’t want to talk to me. It was because they didn’t know how to and I noticed that our communication styles are different.

Thus, I encourage you guys to be the first ones to initiate contact. If you want to talk to the people here, don’t hold back. They will be receptive to you as long as you’re gentle. As we already know, people come to festivals in order to socialize, meet friends, and break through barriers that prevent us from connecting to each other in “real life”. Speaking in English, Japanese, or whatever native language you speak, is okay too. I believe that language shouldn’t hold us back to enjoy life with other people and music.

With great friends around me in the music community, I was able to feel apart of the whole. I advise you guys coming to not be afraid to communicate to people here. Show them how we do and show them the way of the festival which is why it’s important to…

3. Bring your PLUR

Because I haven’t talked to many people about it in my time being here, I feel that there is a serious need of PLUR. As I went to a few festivals and shows here in Osaka, I have not exchanged kandi often. Actually, I only remember trading once with a close friend, PartyFishYuri. As a kandi kid, coming to Japan and not knowing many people who made kandi, I felt a bit lonely. Not that trading kandi is a pre-requisite to understanding PLUR, but to me, it represents something more symbolic than just a bracelet. It represents a sharing of a mutually understood culture.

However, you don’t have to trade kandi. You don’t have to be all touchy or anything. I just ask of you to pass on those feelings of your first event..how good it felt to be connected with someone and not be alone. You know, those warm and fuzzy feelings. I talk a lot about how EDM is connecting the world and how the normalizing of PLUR culture can do great things for us.

With that being said,

Japan is a still an AMAZING place to party.

And there is a lot to this society that makes it an amazing country to live in. The safety, the extreme politeness, respect, and reserved culture are all great things – It helps people work together and keeps the peace among people. I have never felt in any danger here and I can easily walk out in the streets, crazy drunk, around 4 AM with no fear of being robbed or groped. Plus, I have lost my wallet three times and had it returned to me because someone turned it in.

By the way, ALL YOU CAN DRINK beer, cocktails, sake, etc. is a thing here and many of them are less that $20 (called NOMIHOUDAI).

ravers meet up at rave in Japan

Something tells me that Japan naturally has PLUR embedded within the culture. You will be amazed at how polite people here are. But it is some parts of the culture which make it difficult to connect with people, communicate, and express oneself fully. Don’t get me wrong: Japan knows how to party when everyone is feeling the music. I was lucky to have met many great people here who party just as hard as I do and aren’t afraid to do so.

As I said earlier, it just takes a push, or spark to ignite the fire. We can party as hard and as best as we can by sharing the festival culture – By showing that we are able to move, dance, and love freely.

For you and I, those who have experienced it many times, festivals have become an outlet to escape societal restraints so that we could do these things. EDC Japan presents this chance for the people of Japan as long as we share the love and freedom we know of.
