Ever wanted to experience a festival from a totally new perspective? The savormeditation Unicorn Crew program might just be for you!

The Unicorn Crew is a group of individuals chosen from savormeditation' customers who get to represent savormeditation at festivals and carry out the mission to inspire self-expression, creativity and empower individuals at festivals and beyond. The crew is given admission to the festival, dressed in savormeditation outfits and work as a team to promote the brand and interact festival-goers, especially those who are new to the community.

The crew also provides live social media coverage via Instagram Stories and Snachat so followers and fans can get a first-hand look at the latest festival fashion trends and hottest EDM events.

If you're wondering how to apply, or have questions about this magical program, check out this Q&A with Tiny Dancer, Junior Brand Manager of savormeditation!

When did the Unicorn Crew start? How has the program evolved?

The Unicorn Crew first started in October 2013. Over the years, the amount of applicants per festival has grown from 10+ to hundreds! We used to lead each crew ourselves but with time we have cultivated leaders and provided avid brand loyal unicorns with the opportunity to gain experience leading others and representing our brand at festivals and beyond. Furthermore, with the growth of social media, Unicorns have had an increase in responsibilities. It’s not only about trading kandi and making a lasting impact on the community, it’s also about being a brand ambassador and creating stories through social media so that people who are not at the festival can be a part of the experience, too.

Can you tell us what makes this program unique?

This program provides a way for people in the community to have a new festival experience and get some exposure to what it’s like working in a festival setting. Dressing up and attending a festival seems quite easy, however what people don’t realize is that this program has a huge impact on the community and that’s very evident when you talk to festival attendees who recognize the crew. Seeing this first hand just goes to show the impact you can make as an individual and what an even bigger impact you can make working as a team. To be honest, you will meet more people while being an savormeditation Unicorn than you would ever imagine. It’s non-stop socializing. This experience is also about four strangers coming together for the same mission and bonding over their passion for the community. If you make your team and the Unicorn Crew mission a priority you will feel like you’ve found a new family by the end of the weekend. It’s a truly inspiring experience!

How long have you been involved?

I’ve been working with the Unicorn crew since 2015. I remember the first time I got to experience leading a Unicorn Crew at Nocturnal 2015. It was a very special experience for me that opened up my eyes to impact the brand I worked for had on the community. The opportunity to mentor others and gain leadership experience gave me so much confidence in myself. Not only that, it helped me feel more comfortable in my own skin and gave me a greater appreciation for women in my life. I felt very grateful to have the opportunity to work with Mama Unicorn to improve the program and give so many other people the opportunity I had. It invigorated my already unwavering passion for the community.

Can you tell us on average how many applications you get per event (average)?

Depending on the popularity of the event we can get anywhere from 40-500 applicants. This could range from a small, one headliner event to EDC Las Vegas.

If somebody doesn’t get picked the first time they apply, do you recommend applying again?

All the questions we ask in the application are important to us. If you don’t get picked, please don't feel discouraged! Many people apply multiple times before getting chosen. I would suggest going over your application and checking if there was anything you could have elaborated on to make you stand out as a reliable, professional and passionate candidate. We would love you to really pour your heart and soul into each answer. That being said, some crews for major multi-day festivals can be extremely competitive. There are usually more than four applications that we fall in love with but unfortunately, we cannot choose them all.

Do you have any tips on how to make an application stand out?

Take your time with each answer and really make your passion for the community evident. Make sure to choose photos to submit that show your personality in a festival setting and that you enjoy taking festival photos since documenting the experience is such a big part of the job. You do not have to be a model or have modeling experience by any means! We want you to be yourself and inspire confidence in others who can relate to you. Also, let us know why this experience is important to you and what makes you a team player. Finally, I would suggest keeping up to date with what our brand on the @iheartraves and @iheartravesunicorns Instagram.

What’s your favorite part about contributing to is program?

Dressing unicorns is always fun but seeing the members who really blossom after the experience is so fulfilling. You can tell who took the experience to heart and became inspired to be a role model in the community. You also get a chance to see members who gain more confidence in themselves after the experience. There are also members who you see grow into inseparable best friends. What a great gift to be able to give someone!

savormeditation Unicorn Crew at EDC

Unicorns featured: @mollyedm, @lydiagingg, @allysunfit, @amillyamilly

You’ve been the leader for multiple Unicorn Crews. What’s your favorite memory/event from being part of the Unicorn Crew?

Honestly, the girls talks at the end of the night were always heartwarming! It’s all about building each other up and reminding people why they are awesome.

What advice would you give somebody that’s participating for the first time?

Like any festival experience, go into it with an open heart and an open mind. Don’t get too attached to seeing friends who are also attending the festival, make it something completely different and embrace the experience with the crew! Go with the flow and you will find that the moments which happen organically are so much more magical. Also, don’t be afraid to step outside your comfort zone. This is where you will experience the most personal growth!

What’s the application process like?

Once recruitment is posted, you will usually have about 48 hours to apply. The application is extremely thorough! It’s over 30 questions, some of them are long-answer and some are multiple-choice. The application probably takes about an hour to fill out and we are looking for thorough answers. We do take the time to look through all of them, too! We really care about doing our best to choose the most passionate and capable people for the job. Sometimes it can take us a couple of days to narrow it down so we appreciate your patience with this process!

How can I apply to be a part of this experience?

Follow @iheartraves and @iheartravesunicorns on Instagram so you don’t miss our recruitment posts which tells you how to apply. You can also sign up for our Unicorn Crew email list (scroll to the bottom) and we will email you when recruitment begins for festivals you’re interested in. Recruitment is typically a month before each festival.

As a platform-wearing veteran, here are some of my personal tips for the best results with wearing platform shoes to a festival/rave.

I get a lot of questions about wearing platforms, especially from girls who have never worn them before but want to rock them at their next event. The main reason I wear platform shoes (other than the fact that they are freakin' cute) is that I'm very short. They make it easier for me to see the stage, look more level next to my friends when taking photos AND it makes it sooooo much easier to talk to people when you're closer to their height! Music festivals are always pretty loud, so platforms can actually make it so people can hear you better (especially if you're a shorty like me). Additionally, platforms are very flattering making you look taller and leaner.

From knee high platform boots, to thigh high boots, to traditional platforms, here are some of my personal tips for the best results with wearing platforms:

Walking in platforms is not actually very difficult as long as the platform is completely flat like this:

Womens-Shoes-Sharp-AF-Platform-Boots-Black-Side

Demonia Sharp AF Platform Boots

Platforms with a slight heel may take some more experience before getting used to. Notice how the toe and heel are not the same height:

Hella Holographic Platform Boots

Hella Holographic Platform Boots

Sometimes platforms (especially those that are covered in glitter) can be scratchy near the ankle. I try to wear socks or hosiery that go above the ankle. Thigh highs or fishnet tights are always a good option for those since they're stylish and functional!

Demonia Chunky Holographic Purple Platform Boots

Demonia Badass Chunky Platform Boot

I would NOT recommend platforms for festivals that have uneven terrain....especially if it has a massive hill like The Gorge in WA. Not to say I haven't done it before...but if you do make sure to bring a pair of back up shoes and rent a locker. Also, make sure you have assistance walking up and down hills.

Platforms work best on flat hard ground. The NOS Event center (where most California Insomniac events are held) is a great venue for platforms, especially if it's you're first time wearing them. If you're unsure about if you'll last the whole 10-12 hours as a festival, try wearing them out to a bar or club first. From there you can rock them an indoor concert and eventually work your way up to a full-blown festival.

Lastly, most platforms don't have much support in them. I highly recommend getting some insoles (try your local shoe store or Target) ....your feet will thank you!

There are no rules when it comes to rave fashion, anyone can wear platforms even if you're on the taller side (YOU'RE GOING TO HAVE TO BEST VIEW OF THE STAGE!). If you wanna rock em', just do it and embrace the rave queen you are!

Here are some of the hottest platform styles available right now on savormeditation:

Tiny Dancer and Mama Unicorn here. We got to experience Phoenix Lights Festival this year as festie besties on an out-of-state adventure and we have to say it was an incredible experience. Here are our top 6 out-of-this-world memories from Phoenix Lights festival April 7th - 8th, 2018 in Chandler, AZ. It's safe to say, we had an absolute blast.

The Kandi

The Arizona Rave Fam never disappoints when it comes to hospitality and good vibes. We can say without a doubt that these are some of the most PLUR ravers we're ever met! They've definitely abducted our hearts with some amazing hugs and kandi trades. From Aliens, to cacti, to spaceships and personalized kandi...PLUR was thriving all weekend long! We received so much kandi here that we will cherish along with all of our Phoenix Lights Memories.

Arizona Sunsets

There is something about the sunsets that are quite magical! Watching this party go from day to night with your festie bestie is quite a spectacle. Savor the daylight and chill vibes while you can because desert nights bring out the dancing machine in all of us!

The Colony

If you ran into us at Phoenix Lights there is a 90% chance it was while we were in line for a slice of pizza or at The Colony. The Colony stage was hosted by Relentless Beats Deep and featured talented house DJs and producers including Cristoph, MK, Fisher, WIll Clarke, Green Velvet and many more! We couldn't get enough of this banging stage all weekend long and even made sure to grab some fresh RB Deep swag the their merch booth. The colony was definitely our home planet for the weekend and where we made the most memories.

The Theme

The theme of Phoenix Lights festival is all about aliens and UFOs and we were all over it. We even matched our day one outfit to the theme. From the stage names to the art, the vibe was apparent. There were times where we felt like we were on another planet.

Rave Girls Wearing alien themed outfits with black, criss cross mesh halter tops, alien pasties and clear plastic skirts with black leg garters
Out-of-this-world Outfits: Criss Cross Electric Net Halter Top, Space Babe Skirt, Micro Cut Out Booty Shorts

Convenience

Not only was the theme rad, but the convenience and ability to move around the festival from stage to stage was a breeze. Security and ticket check were seamless for us each day and we enjoyed how easy it was to go from lounging in the grass at the Mothership to dancing under the arches of the Colony.

The People

The Relentless Beats attendees are one of our favorite things about Arizona in general. We go to a lot of festivals and we meet a lot of people, but there is something about the Arizona Rave Family that makes us always feel like we're at home. We spent the majority of the daytime roaming around the festival meeting all the awesome people and we even made some friends for life. We're so thankful for all the friendly, courteous and PLUR people we met this year and can't wait to be back to reunite with them again soon.

Group of Ravers at Phoenix Lights Festival

Not to mention the people were amazing, but Mama Unicorn even made friends with a cactus we named Chad. Even the plant life in Arizona makes us happy.

It's no secret that rave culture has evolved over the years. From, new fashion trends, to expanding genres of music, to massive festivals, this scene is an ever-changing way of life. Whether your fashion sense has evolved or your musical tastes have changed, chances are that you're probably a different raver than when you were first introduced to the scene. Everybody's personal growth as a raver is a unique story that is likely to land at the same conclusion - even though you may change, your love of raving stays the same. No matter how you've changed over the years (or even months), reflecting from your first rave to where you are now is always fun and memorable to look back on.

Here are five questions that I get asked a lot about my personal evolution as a raver:

What was your first rave?

My First rave was EDC Los Angeles 2007. My friend asked me if I wanted to go with him and since I'd had a small interest in electronic music I decided to give it a try. It was held at the LA Coliseum which was a magical venue. At first, I thought it was just a daytime concert with rides but the more I explored the festival the more I started to realize that people here were...different. I remember thinking how strange it was to see a guy jamming out in a hamster onesie next to a girl in...basically underwear. I wore jeans and a zip-up hoodie to my first rave. When night fell and the party really started I was embraced by a community that I initially was a bit apprehensive about. I instantly fell in love with the music, the lights, the culture, the fashion, and THE PEOPLE! We closed out the night with Above & Beyond at Kinetic Field and that was basically when I decided that I was a raver.

What does rave culture mean to you?

Rave culture is a way of life! It's a love for the culture that starts infiltrating every part of your daily routine. It's the music that I listen to on the way to work. It's the special kandi that I keep on my desk to remind me of the nights spent with friends. It's the sequins and platforms that are slowly taking over my closet. It's the hospitality I try to put out into the world that was given to me at my first event. It's about the lessons and values I've learned from the rave scene and applying them to my everyday life. I think it's crucial to teach people who are new to the scene about the importance of culture and keeping it alive. Too often people will see raves as an excuse to party. You get so much more from the experience when you apply a deeper meaning to the event.

How has your rave fashion evolved over the years?

Rave fashion has always fascinated me. I think it's a wonderful way to add to the overall experience and can help you feel more comfortable in your own skin. After my first rave, I was inspired to start planning out my outfits for every event I went to. I've always loved colors, sequins, sparkles, glitter, anything girly like bows or crowns. At first, I wasn't confident enough anything too revealing and would opt for colorful shorts, tank tops, and hair accessories. Eventually, as I grew more confident and comfortable with myself and had the courage to get more creative with my outfits. Booty shorts, crop tops, and fishnets were my go-to. As rave fashion became more popular and affordable I found myself with even more options than before and it really challenged my styling skills. Working at savormeditation has inspired me to try out styles that I would never have considered before like rocking platform shoes, pasties, and micro cut out booty shorts. I feel the most me when I'm decked out in glitter and dressed for the rave.

Tiny Dancer's Evolution of Rave fashion over the last decade

What advice do you have for people who want to step up their rave fashion but don't know where to start?

Rave fashion is a great way to show the rave world who you are. I would suggest picking a color or theme that represents you and build off of it. For example, some people like Zelda, so they incorporate a triforce in their outfit. Some people love unicorns so they decide to go full on rainbow theme, including unicorn pasties. Draw styling inspiration from Instagram pages or make a Pinterest board. We also have an outfits section on iHeartraves.com where you can see how we put together outfits for our photo shoots. This is a great way to get a better understanding of styling. Remember, you don't have to go full-on raver your first time. Start with something that you're comfortable with and you'll inspire yourself to get a bit more creative each time. Raves are a safe place where we are told to treat others with peace, love, unity, and respect. It's supposed to be a judgment-free zone where you can express yourself however you want whether it's through fashion, flow arts, dance, etc. Raves take on more meaning when you contribute through the art you choose.

How has your musical taste transformed over the years?

Trance has always been my first true love of electronic music. Above & Beyond, Armin Van Buuren, Ferry Costen, Tiesto and Cosmic Gate were some of my favorites when I first started raving. However, trance music has changed a lot over the years. Many artists I used to love don't make music like they used to since trance isn't as popular. Since then I've expanded my music taste to include variations of melodic bass, drum and bass, deep house, and techno. My current favorites include Above & Beyond, Kaskade, Nero, Feed Me, Lane 8, Eric Prydz, Wilkinson and Delta Heavy.

What are you currently listening to?

I always try to mix it up so I don't get bored of the same sounds. Tthe freshest sound to me right now is probably house music. I curate a monthly playlist of all the music I'm listening to at the moment. I always put the link to my playlist in my Instagram bio so anyone can access it. Next month I'm planning to make a playlist especially curated for all the artist I was to see at EDC Las Vegas.

Nocturnal Wonderland has always been one of my favorite SoCal events. I’ve gone so many times I’ve honestly lost count. I’ve seen Nocturnal evolve from being held at NOS Event Center for a 1 day event to a full 3 nights of dancing for the 20th anniversary last year. I wasn’t sure how anything could top last year but somehow Nocturnal Wonderland took yet another piece of my heart and replaced it with unforgettable memories!

This year I was fortunate enough to be able to camp with my festie bestie @beartatos! I am pretty inexperienced with festival camping so the premiere camping option was a lifesaver! This package provided an already set up tent, air mattresses, pillows, sleeping bags, a lantern, and upgraded bathrooms and showers in a secluded campground called Acorn Village. We brought an easy up canopy, decorations for our campsite and plenty of food, snacks and wine. We snagged some community bean bags to lounge around in during the day too. I highly recommend camping at Acorn Village for Insomniac events!

Day 1

On Friday we decided to dress to match the Unicorn crew! We wore our Magical Unicorn Crop Top, with Tie Die Velvet Bottoms, Lavender Leg Wraps, and Solid Lavender Fluffies! We headed out to Main Stage to Check out Valentino Khan and got our complimentary coconuts! Those coconuts were incredible! We made sure to start out each night with a refreshing coconut all weekend long! Through the crowd I spotted a pair of ears and of course it was none other than @plurrabbit! It’s always a pleasure seeing Jose and what crazy outfit he’s decided to rock for the occasion.

We made plans to meet up with the Unicorn Crew for 3lau b2b Audien! We walked onto the field at Wolves Den and suddenly there were 7 of us girls prancing around in matching outfits and dancing the night away! I busted out my fiberflies pixelwhip and sang my heart out to the set with the girls. Between the company and the music this set was definitely one of my favorites of the weekend!

After that we headed over to Sunken Garden to meet up with @jakeryanduh and @forbiddenkitten! You won’t have trouble finding Jake with his signature head dresses and Janelle was dressed head to toe in rainbow. These two are always a blast to be around. Their energy is always contagious and positive.

After we left sunken garden we met up with a few more friends to check out Mat Zo’s set. I’ve been skeptical of Mat Zo’s recent sets since but I really enjoyed this one! He even played Motzart, a throwback song which I absolutely loved! Me and Katie got some lightshows in during this set with our Levi Wand and Zero Orbit!

We ended out night wit Above and Beyond! To our delight we ran into @raveselfies, @edm_hermann and his lovely fiancée and @missnatalieclaire! Natalie was there with her mom who was attending her first rave. It was such an adorable sight to see! We had such a blast singing to each other all night. At the end of the night my friend invited us back stage after the set to meet Jono from Above & Beyond! I couldn’t imagine a better way to end my night than meeting 1/3 of my all-time favorite DJ group!

Day 2

@beartatos and I really wanted to check out the water park we’s heard so much about! We headed out with @duucky and @sky_nymph to cool off in the water. The waterpark was actually pretty big! It had a ton of grassy areas to nap in, a big pool, waterslides and a giant mushroom fountains! The Unicorn Crew joined us just in time for a group photo from one of the photographers. A second after this photo was taken a huge splash party erupted!

For the second day of Nocturnal we decided to do an Alice and Wonderland theme. I was Alice and Katie was the White Rabbit! We headed to the festival and started off the night with another complimentary coconut and hotdog! On our way to Sunken Garden for the Ajnuadeep takeover we ran into our Washington Unicorns @xoxkail & @butterfly_xo. I was so excited to see these girls at a SoCal rave and they seemed to be very excited to be there too! After that we headed over to the Smirnoff house and got a couple polaroids taken for us for free! I was loving all the freebies this year.

We decided to check out drum and bass legend, Spor, over at the Labyrinth before chilling out at the Anjunadeep stage for Yotto. Here we met up with @emazingbrian and his wife @kang_star and our good friend @alexjennison from INTO THE AM. These faces are always a pleasure to see while at work since our company is like family, but here at Nocturnal we were rave family! I had such a blast dancing and giving lightshows with our squad during Sub Focus, Lane 8 and Odezsa. At the end of the night we met up with the Unicorns and snapped some photos before ending our night at the silent disco!

Day 3

Katie and I made sure to lounge around on bean bags as much as possible during the day. We even got a massage by the masseuse in Acorn Village! On this day we dressed up as daisy kitties are wore Daisy Cat Ears, Mesh Halter Tops, Black Booty Shorts, Yellow Leg Wraps and Black Fluffies! It was a little chilly this night so we made sure to get a lot of pictures of our outfits before it got too cold.

Our night started out with a bang with Ephwurd and Alison Wonderland. We met up with festie besties @airicamichelle and @candicealice! It’s hard to miss their Mau5heads in a crowd! We also got a chance to finally meet @edmhumor. Her and @raveselfies are such sweet girls, and we hope to see more of them at future events.

We caught some of Hermitude before meeting up with @mobsterkitten for Flux Pavillion and Bassnectar. Here I got to meet and trade with a lot of ravers. Everyone loved my pixelwhip and wanted to try it out. We ended our night by checking out Chromeo with @forbiddenkitten before meeting the Unicorns at the silent disco.

The Silent disco was INSANE the last night. It was more packed than any night I had seen all weekend! I hung out with a couple of the @iheartravesunicorns, @sky_nymph_, and made some friends at the disco. We played around with our lights, dances and drank wine. They decided to play music on the speakers instead of on the headphones which got the crowd really pumped. My friend was closing out the Silent Disco and invited me to hang out on stage with him for a bit. I didn’t want the weekend to end but the sun was rising, so I said my goodbyes and returned to the tent to get some rest.

DJ preforming at nocturnal wonderland

This year was full of so much amazing music, old friends, new friends, and new memories that I’ll cherish forever. Nocturnal Wonderland will always be my favorite SoCal festival and even though it just ended, I’m already excited to go back next year!
