The number of EDM subgenres out there is endless, and it can be tough trying to figure out if your favorite house artist is classified as tropical, electro, dutch, progressive, or one of the other ten bajillion sub-genres! To help you become a master at understanding all of the different types of EDM out there, I have created a simple breakdown of some of the most popular types of edm out there and their subsequent sub-genres.

House

Artists: Chris Lake, Tchami, Walker & Royce, Claude VonStroke

One of the leading genres of the EDM world, house music has made its way from its roots as an underground warehouse favorite to the mainstage at your favorite festivals. House music is characterized by its repetition and use of bass drums. The tempo is typically in the 120-130 bpm range and can sound a bit funky. You will almost always find a house stage at every festival, but some spots that best feature edm types like house are Nocturnal Wonderland, Paradiso, Desert Hearts and Dirtybird Campout.

Deep House

Artists: Disclosure, Rüfüs Du Sol, Lee Burridge, Damian Lazarus, Thugfucker

Although popular, this genre of edm is often one of the most misunderstood. Deep house songs follow a 4/4 beat structure, made up of heavy bass and unique chord progressions. The majority of these songs rely strongly on the presence of bass for those smooth wub sounds that we like to hear in clubs and lounges.The tempo is a bit slower than house music but trust us when we say that in a live setting, the vibes with this type of edm are great.

Boogie Blast Disco Outfit

Tropical House

Artists: Kygo, Clean Bandit, Matoma, Klingande

These playful tunes truly sound tropical with their beachy sounds and light drum features. Creators will often utilize the sounds of pan flutes and saxophones to create a sense of calming and relaxation in their music. With tropical house, think poolside chillin’ or laid back beach party. These are upbeat songs that will make you feel as warm as the summer sun you are likely listening to this under.

Progressive House

Artists: Avicii, Oona Dahl, Hardwell, Eric Prydz, Alesso

If you hear progressive house, the only thing you will want to do is dance. This funky genre is simultaneously melodic and hard, driving crowds to get up and groove. These songs often feature extensive build up sections followed by a simplistic breakdown. Progressive house is very experimental compared to other variations of House.

Electro House

Artists: Steve Aoki, Calvin Harris, R3hab, Botnek, Tiesto

Electro house is one of the most intense edm styles of all House music. You’ll know if you are listening to electro house if you notice distorted bass lines with a heavy use of synths, as well as pounding beats and strong buildups. One thing you will NOT hear is a lot of percussion- electro house relies primarily on bass to carry the song.

Red Hot Raver Outfit

Dub

For all my wubheads, Dub has the power to send us into an aggressively euphoric state of happiness. With a focus on bass and uptempo breaks, some of the EDM world’s most legendary drops belong to this genre. Next time you are at a concert but you’re not sure whether or not you are listening to Dub, just look around for anyone headbanging the life out of themselves - that is how you know.

Dubstep

Artist: Skrillex, Flux Pavilion, Borgore

Anything dubstep is typically high in BPM and packed with syncopated rhythmic percussion patterns. This form of bass distortion is best enjoyed when listened to at high volumes. Dubstep is also known for having epic drops that are guaranteed to make it onto every raver's Snapchat story.

Trap

Artists: RL Grime, Baauer, Flosstradamus

Trap originally drew mainly on rap and hip hop, but over time it has evolved to revolve more around electronic sounds. You will hear a lot of snappy snares, loud kicks, and trihats behind the focus of the song's heavy bass. No matter what club or party you are at, you are bound to hear at least one trap song… or twenty.

Glitch-Hop

Artists: Bassnectar, Bleep Bloop, B.R.E.E.D, The Glitch Mob

Unlike most styles, tempo does not play a huge role in glitch-hop, in fact it is usually ignored. DJ's focus on uniquely manipulating sounds and beats to incorporate glitchy tones into their songs. Clicks, bleeps, and sweeps are dominant sounds we hear being combined with traditional Dub elements.

Techno

Tech House

Artists: Fisher, Shiba San, Camelphat

This dynamic cross breed combines the styles of Techno and House to create a distinct structure. Elements such as synthetic melodies and hi-hats are present from Techno, while the tempo and rhythm of House tend to dominate. Tech house is big in the underground community, and it often times pushes people to dance in ways that they never knew they could.

Acid Techno

Artists: Aphex Twin, Hardfloor, Acid Junkies

Distorted layers of sounds and synths are what bring Acid Techno to life. Producers have mastered the manipulation of controls that generate this unique sound. This sub-genre is quite ambiguous and hard for some people to understand.

Trance

Surfacing from the Europe, Trance has flowed it’s way to America and hypnotized us all. Packed with captivating rhythms and sonic elements, Trance has transfixed it’s listeners on this spellbinding genre. One of my favorite Trance festivals is Dreamstate, Insomniac’s leading Trance destination.

Progressive Trance

Artists: Markus Schulz, James Holden

Progressives are smooth running tracks that are constantly flowing from start to finish. The multitude of buildups incorporate futuristic and fast sounds that are balanced with instrumental breakdowns to create a less aggressive tone.

Psytrance

Artists: Infected Mushroom, Astrix, Skazi

Often lengthy, psytrance’s claim to fame is its hypnotic beat. Psytrance may not be for everyone though… it is music created for the body, mind, and soul. The psychedelic gods demand that listeners embrace the energy of the cosmos while radiating the twisted, trancey sounds. It is difficult to only appreciate this music sitting down.

Drum and Bass

This well-known branch emerged from jungle scenes and has become one of the dominant classifications of EDM. Pretty self-explanatory by the name, drum and bass are the two central components that come into play when creating DnB music.  These beat focused songs are the type that are worth blowing out your sub-woofers for.

NeuroFunk

Artists: Ed Rush, Noisia, Optical

Also known as techstep, this style is a funky take on DnB. Neurofunk music features an industrial overtone to the drops, accompanied by a continuously building backbeat. Artists that have mastered this subgenre are extremely brilliant when it comes to blending synthesized percussion sounds with insane basslines.

Future Bass

Artists: San Holo, Troyboi, GTA

These songs can range from aggressive joyful. Future bass is a hybrid of lots of genres, including dutch house, dubstep, and trap. These powerful songs are created with pulsating synths and trap-like beats. Very synthy elements help them to fully transform into future bass.

As most of you know, The Gorge in Quincy, WA, has been home to Paradiso Music Festival for the past 8 years. Due to a handful of legal issues, Paradiso has been canceled. However, Insomniac has stepped up in an effort to still bring a summer show to the Gorge by presenting to us a new, trippy fest. I am expecting this spinoff of Beyond Wonderland SoCal to absolutely blow minds and connect hearts. 

Off to Wonderland

Previously, ravers were showing up to the Gorge dressed to Diso’s “digital nature” theme, but this year we’re going down the rabbit hole and off to WONDERLAND! Think full-on, hardcore Alice in Wonderland vibes-- painting the roses red, trippy patterns, characters from Wonderland, neon colors, and all sorts of creatures (check out this style guide for inspo about What to Wear to Beyond Wonderland) I definitely expect to see this heavily reflected throughout the venue and stage production, but I’ll touch more on that later. 

Lineup

I’m personally very excited about this lineup because it’s got a wide variety of artists so that you can get a little taste of it all. What I love the most about Insomniac’s events is that they set up their artists to perform on an equal playing field. What I mean by that is, by listing their DJs alphabetically in equal sizes and fonts, they’re giving every single artist on the poster an opportunity to wow the crowd based on them and not their ranking on the lineup.

Camping

Camping at The Gorge is truly a one of a kind experience… most of my best memories are from the campgrounds. The campgrounds are all car camping and can hold up to 6 people. In general camping, it’s honestly a huge party! Not only is there music blasting everywhere, but there are tons of food vendors, shopping booths, and staff around to help anyone in need. Although the festival starts on Friday, the campgrounds do open Thursday afternoon, which in my opinion is the most fun night because everyone is just so excited to be there! 

The walk from the campsites to the venue is about a mile long, so be prepared with lots of water and the right shoes. If you don’t want to break a sweat in the boiling Eastern Washington summer sun, there are more camping options to accommodate. The Gorge Amphitheater

Venue

Not only is this epic venue the previous home to Paradiso, but it's also home to Bass Canyon (EDM), Watershed (Country), and Sasquatch! (before Sasquatch! discontinued). The Gorge is located in a rural town just above the Columbia River. Not only are the views absolutely spectacular (I guarantee, very Instagram worthy), but the weather in mid-June can hit up to the 90s! The Gorge obviously will feature its larger acts on its mainstage which hosts up to 28,000 attendees. In addition to the larger stage, we can expect at least two more major stages, plus any additional smaller dance/bar/lounge areas

The Gorge is widely known for its ability to host attractions, so we can definitely expect to see some sort of rides for our thrill-seekers out there; Beyond SoCal just stepped up their game this year to three total rides, so Beyond PNW is bound to have a handful as well. 

One thing I love the most about The Gorge is that no matter where you are, you will always have the best seat in the house! Whether you’re headbanging in the pit or dancing on the hill with your best friends, this venue is so wide and all-encompassing that you always have a unique and beautiful view.

4-Step Rave Booty

If you’re working towards that killer rave booty then LISTEN UP! Repetition of squats is the foundation for achieving the ultimate peachy bum, and all it takes is four simple steps: SQUAT, HYDRATE, KANDI, REPEAT:

Step 1: Choose a squat routine that works best for you (health experts recommend doing 1-3 sets of 10-20 squats per workout session, but increase/decrease the amount per interval to accommodate to your fitness level and booty goals). To start your interval training, complete one set of squats. 

Step 2: Hydrate! Just like we stay hydrated on rave day, your body will appreciate some water during a workout. 

Step 3: If you are a major kandi snob, then this one's for you. While you give your booty a break, make a kandi to trade. It helps to prep your kandi beads and string before beginning the workout so that step 3 remains to be a short but productive resting period. 

Step 4: Repeat!

And that’s it! Not only do you conclude your training sesh with a killer booty routine, but you also get to flex some new kandi pieces. This four-step drill can be modified for any form of exercise, so take your favorite fitness routine or create your own combination of planks, squats, and crunches, and BOOM, you’ve got yourself a custom circuit training!

A big contributor to the rave culture is the immense passion surrounding flow arts. Flow arts encompasses a variety of movement-based disciplines, such as use of the orbit, pixelwhip, levitation wand, gloves, poi, and of course, the hula hoop.

Hooping is an art form that welcomes beginners and provides opportunity for mastery. Hooping is an amazing work out because not only does it require physical effort from all parts of the body, but the technique it requires is a great challenge on the mind. If you think hooping could be your next hobby and form of fitness, try incorporating 30-60 minutes of hooping into your daily routine. Before entering the freakshow, I needed to pick up my ticket from will call, go through security, and do that whole process. Being the derp I am when it comes to directions, I had my driver drop me off at the wrong side of the venue, leaving me with a brief walk to the box office. I was alone, cold, and wearing the tiniest outfit when I stopped a guy wearing a Guest Services tee to ask for directions to will call. He was so kind and more than happy to stop what he was doing and walk me all the way to the box office so I didn’t have to be alone. Once I got there and picked up my ticket, I ended up chatting with more members of the Guest Services team and they assisted me through the entire entry process. Attending an event alone can be intimidating, so I am so appreciative of USC’s crew for being so accommodating, helpful, and overall kind! It was PLUR vibes to the max and I am so grateful to know that USC Event’s hires employees that are not only committed to their job, but their guest’s experience too. 

When I finally got inside, my jaw literally dropped-- it was a freakin’ FREAKSHOW! Games, rides, stages, lasers, this place had the whole 9 yards. I just remember thinking to myself, ‘holy crap, I don’t know how I’m going to get a chance to interact with every aspect of this place, but I refuse to leave until I do.’ I got there early enough to explore the venue before my must-see sets, so of course, I hit the rides first. There were three different amusement rides located right next the main stage, so everyone was headbanging on the rides while trying not to puke...or maybe that was just me? These rides were the crème de la crème of spinny rides. At first, I was worried about the lines taking forever, but surprisingly they went by pretty fast.

After finally getting myself to feel like I wasn’t spinning anymore, I noticed all the photo-opp structures and made sure to hit those next. Of course on theme, there were well-lit art installations scattered throughout the venue. When I ran into one of my good friends, I not only made sure to get a picture with him, but had him be my personal photographer for a bit as well. 

My entire outfit is exclusively from savormeditation: J. Valentine Daydreamin' Mesh Top, Pastease Swirly Stripe Pasties, Malibu BB High Cut Bottoms, and Hex Net Stockings with Attached Garter Belt.

After I had an entire photoshoot, I rushed over to the silent disco where one of my best friends, Yung Wub, was DJing. Silent disco’s have always had my heart; not only do you get to rage between three different DJs, but it’s also funny AF when you take off your headphones and see everyone crazy dancing in what seems like silence. During my time here, I ran into the savormeditation Unicorn crew looking bomb.com in their Halloween fits.

At this point, I had explored all they had to offer and it was time to indulge in the music. I was able to catch half of Brohug and, holy sh!t, those guys throw down. It took me just two seconds to get sucked into their set. Right after Brohug came K?D, and he did not disappoint. His set was both artistic and rowdy as usual, so it was a good call for USC Events to put him on the main stage. Speaking of the main stage, AKA the Twisted Big Top, no matter where you were standing, you had the best seat in the house; due to the venue’s openness, I seriously always had a great view. Whether I was on the floor in the crowd or up the stairs at the VIP bar, the stage production was overall top-notch.

Later on, I decided to wander to the other stages, and the only way to get to the Midway Mayhem stage was through Vendor Village. Not only did they have the usual booths selling psychedelic clothing and light-up gear, but there were psychic readings too! I didn’t have the chance to stop for this because I heard Rabbit in the Moon playing and couldn’t help but book it there, but the psychic readings were definitely a nice touch I appreciated and would definitely take the time to engage with next year. 

To close off the night, I made sure to catch Black Tiger Sex Machine and Porter Robinson. These are some of my favorite artists and they did not disappoint. BTSM was a headbang and a half for sure, and they drew in a pretty large crowd. The Bass Asylum stage, where BTSM played, was a little hard to find a good view, so I just hung out in the bar area parallel to the stage. After BTSM ended, I rushed over to the main stage, found a nice little spot near the back of the crowd, and sat in awe of Porter Robinson. At this point in my raving career, I have had the opportunity to see Porter more times than I can count on one hand, and this guy delivers every single show he plays. This was the best way I could have imagined closing out Freaknight. 

Overall, Freaknight 2019 went beyond what I had expected and I finally understand what all the hype is. Seattle one of those cities that truly embraces PLUR, and it is a community of ravers that I am proud to be a part of. Big shoutout to USC Events for going full send for Halloween year after year.

Attractions

What sets this freakshow apart from most is the insane amount of entertainment beyond the music. In between sets, you have to check out the carnival attractions, including ghostly fast rides, frighteningly fun games, hauntingly interactive performers. With a venue of this size with two large stages, the rides and games are usually pretty doable in between sets, as wait times aren’t that long. You can also explore Vendor Village, a community of vendors selling rave related products within the fashion and technology realms. 

And as always, USC Events has blessed us with an amazing Conscious Crew Staff to help keep us safe, provide safe spaces and chill zones for those in need, and act as a resource for all things FreakNight. If you need a spritz of water on your face, they got you. If you need directions to the medical tent, they got you. If you just need someone to talk to, they seriously got you! FreakNight will be held at WaMu theater from 6:30pm-1:30am. Located directly next to Century Link Field, WaMu theater is accessible in so many ways! If you don’t want to drive yourself, other affordable options are to take the bus, use a rideshare app, or carpool! The theater is in a very busy part of Seattle, so carpooling will definitely be the move. 

Parking

There are multiple parking lots surrounding the circus perimeters that will be available to attendees. The venue lots will be lit up and easily visible, while patrolled by security throughout the event (thank you USC events for keeping the evil spirits away from our cars).

Why: The lineup may not be out yet, but this fest is a force to be reckoned with. This indoor circus not only delivers amazing decor, but the rides are pretty sweet, too. Why: Freaky Deaky is another Halloween classic. Expect to see attendees going all out on their costumes, and raging hard AF all night. Voodoo

Why: Another eclectic fest, Voodoo is bringing three days of some of the biggest names in EDM, such as Bassnectar, Big Gigantic, Snails, The Glitch Mob, Rezzand Zhu. A Halloweekend at Voodoo entails not only music, but culinary experiences, interactive large-scale art installation, a shopping experience, and so much more. Warehouse of Horrors Music and Arts Festival

Why: Have you ever partied at a hundred-year-old warehouse? This event features not only a unique venue, but bone-chiling art and music experiences. Weekend passes and single day tickets are available here, as well as hotel room packages.

Super Natural Festival

Who: Global Dance Presents

When: October 26

Where: Denver, CO - National Western Complex

Why: Global Dance is known for bringing good vibes to Denver. With headliners like Porter Robinson, Deorra, Dion Timmer and more, this one-day festival is guaranteed to be a wicked good time. Grab your tickets here. 

1. Pre-Arrange Transportation

Clearly, I am all about being spontaneous. But one big must for raving solo is planning your rides to and from the venue. Whether you are driving yourself, using a rideshare app, or getting a ride from a friend, plan ahead! You can almost always find a map of the venue with detailed cross streets, so use that to your advantage. 

If you are driving yourself, be aware of where the parking lots are and make sure you have enough cash to pay for parking if needed. If you are using Uber/Lyft, find out where the available pickup locations will be so that you aren’t scrambling at the end of the night looking for your ride among the other thousands of attendees. And finally, if you are having a friend/family member dropping off and picking you up, do your research ahead of time to find out the closest drop-off/pick up areas! The streets beyond festival perimeters are often very hectic and populated with non-festival goers, so be prepared with a plan to avoid as much of the chaos as possible.

2. Prep a Bag Ahead of Time

As you are attending solo, it is important to be prepared with everything you may need for the weekend. This means heading over to your local Walgreens to check off your list of “must haves,” some being: gum, chapstick, extra cash (just in case, because ATM fees at festivals can be steep), a jacket or space blanket, and whatever else you even just think you may need! You are about to be the primary person for yourself to rely on, so it is important that you bring everything you need.

That includes your ID and ticket! When heading to a fest with friends, you usually have each other to double check that you each grabbed your necessities, however, going alone is a different story. It’s super easy to leave behind the simple things (ticket and ID being the most unfortunate to forget).

3. Have a Friend on Standby

This is just a bonus precaution, but I always coordinate with a friend or family member who is NOT attending the festival to “keep an eye on me.” If you have an iPhone, share your location with them so that they can see that you are within festival perimeters. In addition, ask them to text you for check-ins everyone couple hours. 

When I asked my friend to do this for me at OSL, she was more than happy to help, because she wanted me to be safe!

4. Bring Fun Gifts

People LOVE receiving little surprise gifts, so this is one easy way to make your solo adventure extra fun and make friends while doing so. Whether it’s gum (individually wrapped pieces), little toys from the Dollar Store, glitter, or any other freebies, people will appreciate your thoughtfulness and generosity. 

It can be intimidating to approach others when alone, so gifting something little is always an easy way to break the ice! Kandi is definitely my favorite form of gift-giving. Before a festival, I like to make tons of singles with fun words or just the festival name. If you are shy, kandi is one of the most special ways to form a connection with someone because you can easily do so without speaking. Just tap someone on the shoulder, hold up your peace sign, and show them you are ready to trade them something unique! 

5. Preserve Phone Battery

This is one of THE most important tips (whether you are raving solo or not). Your phone battery is everything, it’s how you are going to document your weekend, navigate your way through the fest, and safely get to and from the venue. There are many ways to ensure your power will last, but here are a few:

• Portable chargers → are lifesavers! 
• Disposable camera → if you’re like me, you love to capture photos all night. The camera app is one of the most power draining features on cell phones, so bringing disposables is great for not only saving your phone battery, but capturing some pretty sick photos. 
• Turn off bluetooth → unless you have your airpods in (which I assume you are not granted you are most likely surrounded by some of the biggest artists in the industry), turn off your bluetooth settings because it is a big battery drainer!
• Close apps → apps running in the background of your phone tend to use battery without you even knowing, so close anything you don’t need ahead of time. 
• Charging stations → look into festival amenities/maps because bigger events tend to implement charging stations. Make sure to bring your own cord and charging block.

6. Party Responsibly

If you are over 21 and plan on drinking, definitely do your thing and have fun. BUT (there’s always a but), be responsible. When you’re alone, it’s important to have your guard up at times, so avoid getting too incoherent to ensure that you are present, having fun, and making smart choices (but still have lots of fun).

7. Utilize the Festival’s Crew

Events will have staff on deck that are there to solely help attendees with ANYTHING! So utilize them. Whether it’s program volunteers like Conscious Crew and Ground Control, or the festival’s security team, they are here to help! If you’re ever feeling uncomfortable? Tell them. If you’re ever lost? Tell them. They will guide you to where you want to go. If you’re simply just feeling lonely and the whole solo thing is getting difficult? Tell them. They will keep you company and have fun doing so! 

8. Don’t Be Afraid to Approach Police

Every event will always have police on deck as well, so use that to your advantage. They are here to ensure your safety, so do not be hesitant to approach! Most cops are actually really kind and enjoy meeting festival-goers. 

At my first solo OSL, I had a friend pick me up after the event but was a little nervous to walk to where I was meeting them. I asked one of the police to walk me to my car and she was more than happy to take me there. So do not be afraid! Whether it is walking you to your parked car, verifying your Uber/Lyft, waiting with you until your ride arrives, or whatever it may be, police are present for these exact reasons and they will be more than happy to do whatever it takes to help you stay safe. 

9. Make Friends on the savormeditation Family Facebook Page

People are always posting on the savormeditation Family Facebook page, so join in on the fun! If you need to request access, an admin will accept your request pretty quickly. Lots of people will tend to post a roll call prior to a fest to see who else is attending, but if you don’t see a post for your event yet, then make one! Often times, many other people will comment saying they’re going solo too, so you’re not alone! This is a great way to make friends within the savormeditation community, and you quite possibly might make a new festy friend and attend with them :) 

10. Have Fun! (Duh)

The final tip I have for you is to just have fun! There are lots of things to worry about, but when you are at the fest in the middle of the crowd watching your favorite DJ’s set, just do your best to live in the moment. Treasure the opportunity for connection with others. Enjoy everything that the event has to offer. Focus on yourself and follow an agenda that fulfills your needs. And let this be an opportunity to grow and really get to know yourself more. Flying solo can be a life-changing, inspiring, soul collecting experience, so enjoy every minute of it.

Surprise to Brother and Fans

In classic Dillon Francis style, fans were surprised with an announcement for the day-ger (day rager) via Instagram post. In the video, Dillon takes viewers with him as he drops the bombshell on his brother, who lives in Seattle and inspired the name for the pop-up show. Dillon explains how he named the show, “HELLO SEATTLE, I LOVE YOU!” in honor of his brother who currently resides there. This hilarious video ends up to be an epic fail as their mom ruins the surprise (or in my opinion, made the video announcement even funnier). 

Under the Space Noodle

The Fisher Green Stage in Seattle Center is located amongst the famous Seattle Space Needle and International Fountain. This outdoor space is home to many entertainment events, including Seattle’s own Bumbershoot and The Bite of Seattle. The single-stage venue hosts a mid-sized crowd where everyone has an amazing view of both the performers and the city. And if you really know what’s up, after the concert you’ll hit Dick’s Drive-In Restaurant, an iconic and delicious burger chain, native to the Greater Seattle Area. 

The 6-Artist Lineup

In collaboration with AMFAMFAMF and Upper Left, Dillon has brought Seattleites not only himself, but six of his talented friends: What So Not, Party Favor, Wax Motif, Nitti Gritti, and Kendoll. This eclectic lineup features a variety of EDM styles, including house, dub, bass, and of course, moombahton. Although set times have not yet been released, my guess is that artists will get a timeslot of close to an hour each.

Tickets are currently on sale for both GA and VIP passes and are predicted to sell out. Insomniac absolutely nailed the theme this year! As usual, the performers were totally in character and really helped us headliners to feel like we were actually interacting with the creatures of Wonderland. The scene was also set by the insane art installations and decor. No matter where I was, I was constantly surrounded by giant photo opps, psychedelic lights, and trippy mushroom statues. Stage production also hit the mark on this one; the Queen’s Domain stage had me feeling like I was actually in a castle. The creativity was off the charts - walking into Wonderland was such a magical feeling, and I truly channeled my inner Alice all weekend!

In addition to the infamous life-size chess pieces and bumpin’ art car, some new attractions have been introduced to Beyond and have easily become my favorite. First off, the Flight of the Elephants ride was such a fun little addition! Although the line was long, this ride was well worth the wait; when our elephant began to “fly,” we went so high that I could literally see the entire NOS Event Center all lit up. It was such a beautiful and rare sight to see, it was so magical! Then after the initial shock of how beautiful it was all wore off, I looked around at the other riders and noticed that we were all headbanging so intensely to Eprom (who performed at Mad Hatter’s Castle, the closest stage to the Elephants). My friend and I were both laughing so hard at how FRICKIN DOPE it was that we were all in our own little world up in the sky, headbanging to the same beats. It was definitely one of those happy tear moments. :’)

Another new feature this year was the Rabbit Hole. Beyond really brought the Rabbit hole to life-- walking inside was like falling down a hole through an alternate time dimension… and once I reached inside, I knew I was about to be here for a while. The shipwrecked-esque stage was massive and playing some of the hottest EDM hits. “Drink Me” read the sign above the bar, where people were grabbing drinks left and right. I also got to watch a ton of flow artists doing there thing while I sat under a giant mushroom and traded lots of kandi with cool strangers (rave goals, right?). The Rabbit Hole was such an intimate location for social gathering, meeting new people, and gettin’ down to the groove in a low-key setting.

In terms of the music, let me tell you, there was not a single moment that I was not dancing my a$$ off. This year’s lineup was straight perfection, and not a single artist let us down. Every DJ threw down hard AF, but some of my favorite sets were Cray, Eprom, Don Diablo, and Zhu.

Not only were the stages poppin’, but the Looking Glass Stage was LIT from start to finish. From chillin’ between sets to dancing like nobody’s watching, the Looking Glass was the spot for it all. Beyond’s home for househeads and techno brats, the Looking Glass Stage had an intimate DJ set up with its own full lineup, as well as lots of space to rest, hang out, trade kandi, find lost squad members, and of course, dance!  

Overall, Beyond Wonderland was an experience full of fantastic tunes!

My time at Beyond Wonderland this year went beyond all expectations! There is no place like Beyond Wonderland, and I plan to attend again and again. Going back to reality from this mystifying, whimsical world is going to be a tough transition. Thank you, Beyond, for bringing me new friends, music, and memories!

Why: This dynamic duo is notorious for giving their trance tracks an Egyptian flare. Having known each other since kindergarten, they also host an Internet radio show, Future Sound of Egypt. Aly & Fila produce uplifting beats that sound great through headphones and even greater live! If you’re looking to discover new music and move to the groove all night, then this is a set you definitely cannot miss.

Who: Rezz (Space Mom)

Why: From the most minimal techno to intricate experimental beats, Rezz has mastered it all. Rezz is a badass both on and off stage, and her heavy sets are definitely a reflection. The last time I saw Rezz, she actually reached her hand to the crowd and grabbed my soul… or at least it felt like it. Seriously though, if you’re into jaw-dropping sets that leave you in a warped yet content awe, then be sure to score a good spot for Rezz’s set.

Who: Ganja White Night

What: Dubstep

When: Friday

Where: Mad Hatter’s Castle

Why: Ganja White Night brings such originality to their “Bass Wobbling” sounds. Influenced by dubstep, they have successfully avoided the cliches of the genre and focus on integrating bass with melodic lines. Both members of the duo are self-taught DJ’s and have rightfully earned respect in the industry.

Who: Ekali

What: Future Bass

When: Saturday

Where: Mad Hatter’s Castle

Why: This Canadian instrumentalist and producer is by far my top set for the weekend! Ekali never fails to deliver a dynamic and original performance at every festival. He shows his fans a lot of love on Twitter and genuinely cares about their input. Whether you are headbanging on the rail, vibing in the crowd, or dancing in the back, Ekali’s set will be engaging from start to finish.

Natural light makes for the best photos (bonus points during golden hour, which is about 1 hour before sunset or sunrise), so allow yourself extra time when you get inside to treat yourself to a mini photo shoot.

If you can’t score any sunlight, utilize the camera flash so that the photo isn’t blurry or too dark- don’t worry about red eye, there are apps for that! If you decide not to use flash, the next best thing is to use the “enhance” button on iPhone editing (top right corner). This feature has the power to make all the difference and truly enhance the lighting.

The festival grounds were made for us to take photos in front of! If you can, find an art structure, interactive installation, performer, or any cool spot to pose in front of. The most exciting photos are the ones that incorporate both the muse AND the festival’s unique backdrops.

If you’re having trouble finding a cool photo op spot, elevate your photo by werkin’ fierce poses! Don’t forget to take advantage of levels- both alone and with the whole squad. Hit the rave squat for a solo shot or help your squad create a dynamic group photo with levels. Whether it’s happy arms up in the air or a sexy booty shot, change up your poses every now and you will have yourself a dynamic photo collection by the end of the night.

Finally, you don’t need to have a professional photographer to shoot some fun angles! Encourage your paparazzi to change up shots with high, low, and tilted perspectives; the more you play around with angles, the closer you are to finding a cool shot.

Also, take advantage of any props you might have on/with you, such as fans, backpacks, and outfit elements. If you’re wearing a themed outfit, play off of it by incorporating in-character poses.

Now here’s where the real fun begins! Whether you have an iphone or not, you can get creative by adding filters, stickers, and lenses to your post. There are so many photo enhancing apps out there, but here are my favorites:

VSCO: A popular editing app, VSCO features premium filters and intricate editing tools. Many of the built-in lenses will make your photo instantly ready to face the feed.

PicsArt: This inventive app provides more than just filters, collaging, red-eye fix, teeth whitening, and blemish removal. Take your photo to the next level by adding stickers, cutouts, text, brushes, borders, and masks. These effects can be used to add in everything from subtle enhancements to over-the-top works of art.

Enlight Pixaloop: Add motion to your photo with this quick and easy animation tool. Furry coats, liquids, wheels, skies, you name it! Anything can be animated and altered to the speed you choose.  Top it off with some overlays and filters and you’re good to go. Now, you can also use the final result as a live phone wallpaper!
